Alabama and Chattanooga bond repayment receipt books, 1870-1873.

In 1870 the State of Ala. issued securities to guarantee loans made to railroads for construction in the state. When the railroads defaulted the state had to implement various financial tactics to remain solvent. This series consists of receipts and account sheets for payments made by the state on obligations issued by it in 1873. The series consists almost exclusively of receipt books. The account sheets tally the total number of payments made at a given location during a given day. These receipt books were routine records used in the actual implementation of the bond repayment program.
